June 2000Summer Project Notes
The Ambassador’s Inn. This is the old hotel that our students and single staff stay in. We have spent the past few days getting it fixed up and ready to be lived in.Shelly’s Summer DiscipleshipI am already learning more specifically how to be a discipler. One thing that the staff is doing for each student is devising a plan for discipleship. This plan includes assessing the person’s strengths and areas where development is needed, stating a vision for the person’s life, and then determining long-term and short-term goals. I am not in a discipleship relationship with any students this summer, so I am creating a plan for the student whom I discipled last year. I will then share it with her when we go home. I am also developing one for myself and I will be reviewing it with another mom on the project. I am planning to get together with the women students who are here from U-M. I hope to spend some time with them sharing the gospel with the people on the boardwalk. Weekly EmphasisEach of our weeks will have a special emphasis. This is what the next few weeks look like so you can pray more specifically for the students. May 28—Laying a FoundationThe students will be working on the house and beginning to look for jobs. We will help them prepare spiritually for the rest of the summer. June 4—Setting the PaceDuring this week the students will get used to what the weekly schedule will look like for the rest of the summer. We will do our first evangelism on the Ocean City Boardwalk. June 11—Thirsting to Know HimDuring this week we would like to help draw our students into a deeper intimacy with God. June 18—Killing the GiantsThis is one of the most important weeks of the summer for our students. We want them to set individual faith goals of how many people they will share their faith with. Our desire is that the students would learn to trust God in the area of evangelism as they share Christ with hundreds of people. June 25—All For OneDuring this week the students will develop in communication skills, working as a team, and recognizing and appreciating different strengths in the body of Christ. July 2—World VisionDuring this week we want the students to consider their role in helping to reach people for Christ in every nation of the world. July 9—Agape WeekThe name of this week comes from one of the Greek words for love. During this week we will be celebrating our students, the love we have for them, and all that God has done in their lives and groups. We will be sharing discipleship plans with each student. Shelly talked about these plans on the previous page. The staff team will be leaving at the end of this week and then the students take over all the responsibilities of running the project. Personal NotesWe have a couple from Nebraska living across the hall from us. They have two children, ages 2 and 3 months (11 days older than Andrew). The mom, LeAnne, and I plan to take the boys to the beach together this summer. We will also be hanging out together quite often, which will be a lot of fun. We will have a date night every Friday! Two students will come over to babysit, in exchange for dinner and use of our washer and dryer. How fun! Fridays are our days off, also, so I am trying to plan fun things to do as a family. We are thinking about taking the ferry over to Delaware one day. This past weekend I went to a neighborhood garage sale and a children’s thrift store. I can find those places anywhere!
Luke (left), from the University of Michigan and Jeff, from Ohio State show that even mortal enemies can learn to live together. Jeff is in Nate’s discipleship group this summer. Andrew’s UpdateI am learning so much! I like to suck both of my thumbs at the same time now. My friend Luke is trying to teach me how to roll over, but it’s so much easier just to rest my head on the floor. I love to talk, especially with all the cute girls that are here! Mommy is finally getting some good sleep, since I’m sleeping through the night. Last night I slept for 9 1/2 hours before Mommy woke me up for breakfast. If it ever gets warm, I’m going to go play in the water at the beach. Next MonthNate will talk about the guys he is working with this summer. More pictures Andrew’s update
