November 2000

Do you agree with Scott?

This past Monday (October 30) began the most significant outreach of the year and what could be one of the most significant outreaches ever for Campus Crusade at the University of Michigan. The outreach is called "I agree with Scott".

Scott is one of our student leaders. He has agreed to be the point of conversation and controversy on campus for the next two weeks. Late Sunday night a large group of our students covered the campus with posters saying, “Do you agree with Scott?” and painted the “Painted Rock” with the same statement. Monday we ran an ad in the student newspaper with only that saying. Throughout this week we plan to put this statement on chalk-boards, on the screens of computers in computer labs, and on every poster kiosk on campus. By the end of the week the whole campus will be wondering who Scott is and what he believes.

The second week we shift to "I agree with Scott." During this week we will issue a statement of what Scott believes in the campus newspaper (see inset on next page). All of us Campus Crusade staff, many of the students in our movement, and hundreds of students from other Christian groups will be wearing bright green T-shirts that say "I agree with Scott" (Scott himself will wear one that says "I am Scott."). Again we will cover the campus, this time with the statement "I agree with Scott." We will have tents set up on the central area of campus where people can come and talk to us and our students about what Scott believes and why they do or do not agree. Scott himself will speak in many dorms and at our weekly meeting about what he believes.

Our hope is that by wearing the “I agree with Scott” t-shirt our students will have many opportunities to share the gospel as students ask them who Scott is and what he believes. On most campuses where this type of outreach has been done before that is exactly what happened. For many students this will be a huge step of faith, with many of them sharing their faith for the first time.

The goal of this outreach is not to have a big event where people come and hear the gospel. The goal is for the whole campus to be talking about Jesus Christ! As Scott himself has said, “This is not a week about Scott; this is a week about Jesus Christ.” Students all across campus will be confronted with the good news of Jesus Christ. Many of them will scoff at the message. Some will be gripped by the message and receive Jesus Christ into their lives! Either way God will be glorified as His name is lifted up and students are confronted by the truth of who He is and of their standing in His sight.

Scott’s Statement of Faith

I believe in God, who created the world and everything in it. He is eternal, all-knowing, all-powerful, glorious, and perfectly loving, just and gracious.

I believe He created men and women in his own image. But humankind walked away from God, causing a separation between the two. This rejection of God, called sin, has been characteristic of all humankind ever since.

I believe that, in order to bridge the gulf, God came into this world as a person, Jesus Christ. He lived a perfect life, never sinning while facing all the temptation known to humankind. He offered Himself as the way to whole and abundant life. He died by crucifixion as a substitute payment for the sins of humankind. I believe the historical fact of the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ.

I believe that personal faith in Jesus Christ (who He is, what He has done, acceptance of His Kingship) is humankind’s only provision for their sin, the only way to right standing with God; and I believe that God grants eternal life to the faithful.

I believe in the personal return of Jesus Christ to this world.

I believe in the presence and power of God’s Holy Spirit in bringing about his will.

I believe in the authenticity and the authority of the Bible, the inspired word of God.

Prayer Requests for “Scott Week”

  • Pray for Scott, that he would be walking closely with God, that God would protect him from physical and spiritual attack, and that God would give him many opportunities to share his faith.

  • Pray for all of our students as they step outside their comfort zone and have many spiritual conversations.

  • Pray for our student leadership team who is running this event, that they would have strength to make it through these two busy weeks.Pray that the weather would be unseasonably warm during the second week (November 6–10) so that students can wear their T-shirts outside and so other students will be outside to talk to.

  • Pray that God would move in an incredible way on our campus and that many students would come to know Christ.

Andrew's Update

Our house is looking a bit different these days. We now have a gate up and all “unsafe” things off of our floor. Andrew is creeping like an army crawl, all over the place. He gets very upset when he is stopped by an immovable object, like a wall! Andrew’s latest favorite foods are graham crackers and macaroni and cheese. He has pulled Shady’s tail a couple of times and I’m just waiting for a close encounter!
