May 2001The Summer AheadVirginia BeachThe first half of our summer will be spent in Virginia Beach, VA as a part of the summer project there. We will be joining 76 students and a number of staff from around the country. The students will work full-time during the day and will spend their evenings in training, Bible study and outreach. I will be working closely with four student men on the project—doing evangelism with them, teaching them, and encouraging them in their walk with God. I will also be in charge of operations for the project. This includes handling the finances for the whole project, making sure all students are covered by insurance, and generally making sure we stick to budget and do everything according to Campus Crusade policy and IRS regulations. It is a big job and will require a lot of my time, but I’m looking forward to the challenge and to learning about the administrative side of Campus Crusade. Shelly will be helping me with the finances for the project since she handles the finances for our campus. I will really appreciate her help. She will also keep track of Andrew and try to keep cool in spite of being seven months pregnant. Summer project is a great opportunity for students to get the training that they need to be most effective on campus. Project is also the best opportunity for us as staff to be trained and developed. More than during the school year, we have the time to focus on becoming more effective as ministers. We will give you updates throughout the summer. U.S. Staff ConferenceEvery two years 4000 of our United States staff members attend this conference, held in Fort Collins, Colorado. I will be attending the conference which runs from July 14-25. Shelly will not be able to attend because it occurs too close to her due date (August 27). This particular conference is historic in that Campus Crusade for Christ will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. There for the first time in our history the presidency of this movement will change hands. Dr. Bill Bright will be officially stepping down as the president of the ministry and turning the reigns over to Steve Douglass. I'm looking forward to learning what God has been doing around the world through our 22,000 staff members. It will be a good opportunity to hear from our national leadership about the state of our ministry and our future direction. I will also have a chance to connect with staff from all over the country and to learn about the things they have been doing on their campuses. This will enable me to bring back ideas that we can consider for our ministry here at the University of Michigan. A little sister?Shelly recently had her ultrasound, and it looks like we are going to have a girl. Of course we have had too many friends who also thought they knew what they were having, so we are still going to work on a boy’s name (we still have our girl’s name from the first time). The due date is late August.
Andrew's UpdateThis picture is from my first Easter egg hunt. Everybody got very excited when I would pick up these plastic eggs and drop them in the bag Mommy was holding. I think I provided some good entertainment for them. Mommy told me all about Jesus and Easter. I don’t know who Jesus is, but I hear a lot about him. I had a rough week 2 weeks ago when my first molar was coming in. I got Mommy to put me to bed early for all of my naps and Daddy put some stuff on my tooth that made me forget all about it. Daddy says that once I get more of these teeth I’ll be able to eat more meat—I can’t wait!
Andrew loves throwing his soccer ball around in the yard.
Andrew just got his first “real” haircut at a campus barbershop. He cried through the whole thing, but quickly got over it once it was done. CCC News—LINC-NetCampus Crusade has gathered many of the best evangelistic resources in the world on one Web site (www.evangelismtoolbox.com). “We hope to see the kingdom of God built more rapidly through these tools placed in the hands of motivated servants of God,” says Allan Beeber, director of LINC-Net. Beeber earned the Robert Coleman Award form the Internet Evangelism Coalition for his part in the Evangelism Toolbox. (from Worldwide Challenge)
