Summer Plans

For the first time since we have been on staff we will not be on a summer project this year. Instead I will be taking part in a couple of different opportunities that relate to training the future leaders of our ministry.

One of the foundational aspects to everything we do in our ministry is the Bible. God’s Word is central to everything we teach and in planning every ministry strategy we implement on campus. It is essential that we as staff know the Word well and allow it to direct our steps in ministry.

For all of June and July Shelly and I will be in Fort Collins, Colorado. My first responsibility is to be a teaching assistant for the Inductive Bible Study Methods class taken by all the people joining staff this summer. This gives me an opportunity not only to teach once in front of the whole class, but also to interact each day with a small group and give them more personalized Bible study training. It is my hope that I will be able to help these new staff gain a greater appreciation for the Word and increased skills in handling it correctly.

My second responsibility will be helping to lead a two week project in which undergrads from all over the country come and take seminary-level classes alongside staff who are in Colorado for summer training. It is our hope that these two weeks will give these students a greater knowledge of the Bible and a greater love for God that will impact their ministry on campus.

After these weeks we will be joined in Fort Collins by 7000 other Campus Crusade staff from across the country as we participate in the bi-annual U.S. Staff Conference. During this conference we will hear from our national leaders including Steve Douglass, the president of Campus Crusade. It will be an exciting time as we are reminded of God’s calling on all of us as an organization and as we consider more effective methods of ministry.

Nate and some of the leaders he meets with each week on campus. Each week this year Nate has led them in a study of  the book of Romans. Ben (upper right) and Jeff (bottom) are graduating and both of them will be spending next year doing ministry with Crusade in a large middle-eastern country.

Nate’s Ordination

One of the most important steps that any minister can take is in seeking from a local church official recognition that he is suitable to continue as a minister of the gospel.

For a number of years now, since graduating from Seminary, I have desired this recognition from a local church. The time seemed right to pursue ordination now that we have been at our church in Ann Arbor for three and a half years, and I have had opportunities to teach in the church. It also seemed like the right time since I have established myself in ministry, validating my plans to stay in this long-term.

On Thursday, May 22 an ordination council will convene to consider my qualifications for ordination by Grace Bible Church in Ann Arbor. An ordination service will take place at 7pm  that evening. Consider this an open invitation to any of you who are able to come. It would be a privilege to have you present at this important occasion!

Kids' Corner

I just visited the doctor. He knew what I meant when I held my arms up to him, so I got to sit in his lap while he wrote on  my chart. He said that I am tall and lean. Mommy had a hard time understanding that since she sees my big belly.

We went on a couple bike rides and got to play at some playgrounds. Then, just when it was getting warm and we were able to go outside, we had to put on our snowsuits again because we got snow. I’m getting better at getting over the mounds of snow on the edges of the driveway—I slide over them. Next year I’ll be really good at that!

Mommy is making me lots of fun clothes for the summer. I think it will be fun to make new friends in Colorado and to get to go swimming in the pool at the apartment.

Corn on the cob. One of the simple pleasures of life!

Lately I have been pretending to be a policeman. I point out all the police cars when we are in the car; sometimes I even see them before Daddy or Mommy do. I told Mommy that I want to be a policeman when I grow up. I also said that I want to be a daddy. Mommy says I can do both!

I am starting to sing more songs. My favorite one right now is the pirate song from Jonah, the Veggitales movie. My version goes like this: “We are pirates no do nothing, lay round, play all day, tell us do something, we say no do anything.”

I was very sad when our “last” snow melted. I cried. Mommy told me God makes the snow. So every day that week I said I wanted more snow so I could shovel. And God gave us more snow! Isn’t God great?

Mommy went away for three whole days and we got to hang out with Daddy. We had lots of fun and even got to go to the Toledo zoo! My favorite part was the big furry gorilla!

Prayer Requests

We appreciate so much your prayers for us in ministry and as a family. Here are some specific ways that you can pray for us.

¨         Pray that the students would not grow cold in their walks with the Lord this summer. Pray that they will continue to grow and will return strong in the fall.

¨         Pray for Amanda. She is a junior and babysits for us on our date night. Her mom has terminal cancer and is in a lot of pain. Amanda is feeling pressure as her family is leans on her for support. Her dad is finding it hard to get his work done. She also has a twin sister and a brother. Pray for her siblings’ salvation.

Update (4/21/2003): Amanda's mom died this morning. Please pray for her and her family during this difficult time.

¨         Pray that we will have good family times this summer.

¨         Pray for Nate as he prepares for his ordination council.

Between now and when we leave for Colorado we will be raising needed support. Pray that God would provide for us during this next month and a half.
